Women

URI founders around the world recognized that the leadership of women is essential, so we are committed to the equitable participation of women and men in all aspects of URI.

More than 1500 members in 40 Cooperation Circles are devoted to projects for women, which focus on domestic violence prevention and counseling, job and skills training, gender equality, education and more. In 2010, eleven CCs joined together to launch a new URI Women's Coalition MCC including CCs focused on women's issues as well as CCs that support and encourage women's leadership on these issues.  This new MCC will help create a platform for joint activities, advocacy, communication and sharing of resources; strengthen and support existing women’s CCs; and align with other organizations that share our vision.

URI Celebrates International Women's Day

When I was a young woman starting my career in theatre in the mid 1970’s, there were almost no women in prominent positions within the theatre community. For women of color, the opportunities were even fewer. I learned at a young age that as a woman I needed to fight harder to have my voice heard, so I started a multi-cultural theatre company with two female colleagues. It was one way to address a void that still persists decades later.
