Europe Daily Prayers
A selection of daily prayers representing Cooperation Circles in Europe (Day 203 to 200, Day 61 to 42).
Day 203:
Let us gather our spiritual strength to support URI-UK CC
The purpose of this cooperation circle is URI Purpose: “To promote daily, enduring interfaith cooperation, end religiously motivated violence, and create cultures of peace, justice & healing for the Earth and all living beings”.
The start of URI takes us to San Francisco, USA 1996. With the idea of making URI a global organization the first gatherings outside USA were organized in 1997. People from different religions, spiritual expressions and indigenous traditions in different parts of the world shared the vision and worked together to create this global community dedicated to promoting enduring , daily interfaith cooperation. The first of these gatherings took place in Oxford, United Kingdom and was the basis for the growth of URI in UK, Europe and the world. Some of these pioneers formed URI- UK CC after the Charter Signing in June 2000. Let us thank them for their commitment and support their work
May members of URI- UK CC fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in United Kingdom!
May Peace prevail in Europe!
May Peace prevail on Earth!

Day 202:
Today we will support Initiative Interfaith Magazine CC
This cooperation circle gathered with the purpose : “To produce a magazine that will facilitate interfaith dialogue and understanding”.
This is how members describe their activity and hope: “Our CC publishes an interfaith magazine called “Initiative”. Our aim for the magazine is "to open windows on world religion, beliefs and practices in the hope that this will foster understanding and thus reduce religiously motivated violence."
We have a broad readership in the UK and Europe. We plan to take the magazine into classrooms as a resource for students and teachers”.
The magazine is now called "Faith Initiative" and its website is http://www.faithinitiative.co.uk. When you visit it you find the object of this publication is the promotion of religious harmony by: providing educational resources and information to promote a better awareness of the causes and consequences of inter-religious tensions and conflicts; and educating the public in the diverse nature of religious belief.
We are used to virtual and quick communication. This makes publications rare and valuable. We know that gathering interesting and educative articles and keeping this through the years is not easy. Let us support their effort
May members of Initiative Interfaith Magazine CC fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in United Kingdom!
May Peace prevail in Europe!
May Peace prevail on Earth!

Day 201:
Today we will support Faith 2 Faith CC with our prayer /meditation.
This Cooperation Circle approved for membership in February 2007 was created “to foster harmonious and positive relationships”.
This is what members share with us: “We are a unique group of old and young working cohesively for the betterment of our family of mankind. Our activities include discussions; we share food, because food brings people together; and the men also do sporting activities and healthy living activities. Then there are ladies, too, who go on day trips together and do craftwork. We share about religious festivals and invite each other for religious holiday celebrations”.
A piece in our preamble says we believe that our religious spiritual lives rather than dividing us guide us to build community and respect for one another. Sharing life as this people do is surely a very good way to build community. Let us support them in prayer/meditation.
May members of Faith 2 Faith CC fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in United Kingdom!

To encourage people to create a peaceful society locally and globally without any discrimination of human rights.” They describe their very interesting activities like this: “We have a membership from different countries of Central Asia, of all whom currently live in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Our diversity includes Muslims, Christians, a Jew, a Zoroastrian and a Buddhist. Our main focus is to promote a dialogue of cultures. We have organized various seminars, roundtables and concerts in this field. We organized an International Peace Day celebration, under the direction of the Ziyodullo Shahidi International Foundation with the partnership of the UN Tajikistan Peace-Building Office. More than 1500 participants attended including representatives of different faiths present in Dushanbe. A seminar 'Dialogue of Religions for the Culture of Peace' was held at the Slavic University of Dushanbe. Speeches about Islamic tolerance for diversity of cultures and religions elicited many questions from the students."

From East Europe to West Europe we will join in prayer/meditation to support Associació UNESCO per al Diàleg Interreligiós - CC.
This CC located in Barcelona, Spain develops a wide variety of actions directed to achieve their purposes: “To bring together experts from various religious and cultural traditions; to promote attitudes of mutual understanding and cooperation; to organize studies about the various religious traditions; to facilitate the enculturation of religious traditions."
This is how they describe their activities: “We are a Catalan non-confessional (or, at least, pluriconfessional) organization which brings together about one hundred people from more than ten different religious traditions through activities promoting knowledge, dialogue and cooperation among the various religious confessions in Catalunya. Among our collaborators, there are official representatives, experts and, especially, qualified base members. Our current activities include different inter-religious groups of dialogue, the organization of interfaith prayers about 'Spirituality and AIDS,' seminars and conferences about religious plurality and inter-religious dialogue, the promotion of the teaching of religions at school, the publication of an inter-religious calendar and a quarterly magazine, collaboration in the edition of different books about inter-religious dialogue, and a web page (www.audir.org). We were highly engaged in the organization of the IV Parliament of World's Religions, held in Barcelona in July 2004, as we worked on the program and activities that took place during this great event. We are getting actively involved in interreligious mediations."
We need active cooperation circles around the world that can impact locally and make URI better known globally. Please join us to pray /meditate to support their good work

Day 58:
And from Romania to Russia…Today we will pray/meditate to support Religions for Humanity CC.
This is what they say to let us know the purpose of their work: “We believe in the general purpose of URI and we think that for implementing this purpose in contemporary Russia we should try to make people get rid of their wrong beliefs like 'the Jews have robbed Russia,' 'Muslims are terrorists,' 'Russia for Russians' etc. For that we are to spread knowledge about various religions and to support people’s belief in human value's."
They have found that education is a mean to achieve this goal: “Four of our members are teachers, so they consider their main task to be working with students. We organize discussions on the most important problems of our life, such as the war in Iraq, the roots of terrorism, and the discovery of common features among various religions. For example, in Islam, Christianity and Sikhism, there is a balance between preserving the main values of a particular religion and finding the basis for dialogue between religions. Our CC is preparing an exhibition showing the theological basis, ethics and main rituals in various religions. We also try to make a wide audience familiar with URI activities by spreading the information we receive by e-mail and the United Religions Initiative magazine."
I had the opportunity to talk with two members of this cooperation circle during URI Europe gathering and was impressed by what they shared about their work. It is so important that we overcome prejudices learning more about our brothers and sisters! Let us support their good work.

Day 56:
On this day in which we are celebrating the seventh anniversary of the Charter Signing we will join in prayer/meditation to support Steering Committee URI NL.
This Cooperation Circle was approved for membership in May 2005 with the purpose of: “organizing and coordinating activities for interfaith Dialogue and understanding.” They share with us: “Our work started in 1998. We started our interfaith work with a common Dutch and Flemish Belgian group and later separated both country efforts. Our members are Christians of different denominations, Muslim, Brahma Kumaris, Tibetan Buddhist and we try to reach all faiths. We have organized inter-religious days and trainings in cooperation with a woman of the intercultural radio. Six years ago, we had a big interfaith celebration in Rotterdam in a church which was bombarded by the Nazis during the war. 1500 people attended, which really exceeded what we had been hoping for in terms of participation. Currently we are planning an interfaith celebration on 05-05-05 (end of World War II) and we hope and think that it will create a lot of interest and enthusiasm. A few years ago we created a leaflet with the PPP’s in Dutch language which we continue to use until today.”
The experience of the richness of the dialogue among convictions in this area inspires our prayer/meditation to support their work.
May members of Steering Committee URI NL fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in The Netherlands!
May Peace prevail in Europe!
May Peace prevail on Earth!

Day 55:
We pass to a different country in Europe: The Netherlands.
In the Netherlands we have two cooperation circles and some others to come.
Today we will pray/meditate to support Interfaith Dialogue Utrecht CC.
Members of this cooperation circle got together with the purpose of “deepening and widening interfaith dialogue and understanding.”
You know that Cooperation Circles are created by people that want to get together to start a new group, or are part of an existing group who want to be associated with URI, because they share URI's purpose and want to become part of our community. Their description is as follows: “we decided to join this framework, which excited and enthused us and continues to do so. We hold monthly meetings with deep conversations amongst each other, we hold encounter e.g. in connection to religious celebrations. E.g., we once held a celebration in a church on the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice. It included talks, prayers, sharing food. Or members belong to the following religions: Christian (Catholic and Protestant), Subud, Muslim, Sufi. We meet in different religious places, like churches, but also mosques (most of Turkish and Moroccan descent)."
Let’s support their enthusiasm in prayer/meditation.
May members of Interfaith Dialogue Utrecht CC fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in The Netherlands!
May Peace prevail in Europe!

Day 54:
Today we will support with our prayers/meditations URI Germany CC (URI Deutschland CC) that was formed to:
* Create administrative structure for URI in Germany
* Inspire and support CCs in German-speaking countries
* Promote the aims of URI and make them better known in Germany.
This is what they share about their work: “We are glad about the successful first meeting of the URI Germany CC. After the meeting we sent out a press-release to about 1,200 contacts all over Germany, explaining the URI. We received very positive feed-back. Everybody in our CC circle plans to build a new CC in their local communities. We plan to create administrative structures for URI in Germany and possibly raise funds and hold an interfaith-conference. One member has improved the German version of the Charter. We want to continue to exchange information and inspiration with CCs and staff around the world.”
It is interesting how following our principle 13 (We have the authority to make decisions at the most local level that includes all relevant and affected parties) CCs in different parts of the world find ways to create structures that best serve the work and growth of URI at local level. Let us pray/meditate to support the structure Germany has created through URI Germany CC.
May members of URI Germany CC fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in Germany!
May Peace prevail in Europe!
May Peace prevail on Earth!
*********************************************************************
Day 53:
Still supporting CCs in Germany we will gather our spiritual strength in prayer/meditation for URI Berlin CC.
The specific purpose of this CC is “to promote dialogue and peacebuilding actions between different religions in Berlin.”
When they created their CC in March 2003 they said: “We will have several projects; one will be to organize schools with at least three URI members of different traditions to teach young people about different religions and the culture of peace. The other will be to promote peace between religious communities such as Muslim and Hindu communities. We hope to develop the school project in the near future."
We surely agree that teaching young people is an important part of our action plan to help create cultures of peace, justice and healing. Let us support their work.

Day 52:
Today we will be praying /meditating to support Unitheum e.V. This CC was approved in November 2006 and reading their purpose we can perceive the depth and strength of their commitment:
“The purpose and the most important idea of the association is to create and to maintain a place of consideration of the common ethics of world religions, to give an impulse of thinking in a new manner about a peaceful togetherness of all religious persuasions; to promote the exchange of thoughts, the understanding, and the peaceful coexistence of people of all world religions; to contribute to the peace of people, nations, ethnicities and religions by supporting of tolerance, respect, empathy, compassion and acting in a charitable way, according to the ideals of all world religions and of humanism; to promote the global consciousness of responsibility for the emerging unity of humanity in appreciation of its variety. The association is politically neutral and non-denominational. The association wants to realize these aims particularly by erecting a sacred building and organizing and celebrating Universal Worships in it, in which the utmost ideal of each special religion will be adored – with the aim to promote respect and understanding of the different religious persuasions; creating and supporting a meeting place for information and to exchange ideas and share reflections, for people from all spiritual traditions, but also for people without any denomination; organizing seminars, congresses, meditations, concerts and much more of that kind according the purposes of the bylaws; organizing and offering spiritual welfare; establishing a library with the Scriptures of all world religions and literature, which contribute to deeper understanding of them."
They describe their activities like this: “Our main work over the last few years has been to network and make our dream and project of an interfaith-house better known. One of our highlights has been a universal worship - which is a journey through the emotions of all world religions - at the One-Spirit- Festival in the Congress-house of Baden-Baden/Germany, where approx. 70 people have been present and many were very much moved. We hope that through URI we can be part of a network of like-minded groups, strengthening each other, and at the same time be part of an organization of good reputation, making our initiative known and get to know others.”
Let us support their vitality together in prayer/meditation.
May members of Unitheum e.V fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in Germany!
May Peace prevail in Europe!
May Peace prevail on Earth!
*********************************************************************
Day 51:
We pass from Finland to Germany to support German Muslim - League Bonn CC (Deutsche Muslim-Liga Bonn E.V.). The purpose of this very active group is: “to promote a dialogue between all human beings with particular emphasis on members of the Abrahamic religions.”
We read about them in our community directory: “We are an association of Muslims and friends of Islam, of men and women, whose aim and praxis is to function as bridge between Muslims and people of other faiths or none, to work for understanding among religions, and to conduct dialogue among different sectors of civil society and public life. Whereas these efforts encompass dialogue with all human beings, particular emphasis is given to those belonging to the Abrahamic religions. Approximately twelve interfaith conferences every year are being co-organised by us. Since 1987, we have been the Islamic Sponsoring Organisation of the 'Standing Conference of Jews, Christians and Muslims in Europe' (JCM), assembling twice a year at the Hedwig-Dransfeld-Haus, Bendorf. Additionally we offer a wide range of lectures, one-day conferences, regular interfaith prayer meetings, travels and planning meetings, on a nearly daily basis. We began in 1983 as the Bonn branch of the German Muslim-League, Hamburg, Germany, which is the oldest uninterruptedly existing Islamic association in Germany, having been founded in 1952 in Hamburg and officially registered in 1954.”
I am imagining Sheik Bashir and Karimah refreshed and reenergizyed by our meeting in Antwerp. Let us pray for all CC members so that they can work steadily to acchieve their goals.

Day 50:
Today we will join in prayer/meditation to support URI's Christian-Muslim Circle of Helsinki CC.
They have gathered strengths “to promote expertise in Christian-Muslim relations and in these religions as well as promote sincere and open dialogue."
This is how they describe their activities: “We expand cooperation between Christians and Muslims in the capital area by hosting panel discussions and seminars at the University, a Cultural Center and other places. We like to encourage people to get inspired by the possibilities of interfaith dialogue and learn about their own and their neighbours’ religions. We deepen our knowledge about each other’s religions and meet once a month in our churches and mosques. Our members are active in their own communities by having different posts. In the year 2006 we have celebrated our 5th anniversary within the circle and with the wider audience."
Having met our sisters and brothers of European CCs in Antwerp, we learned how urgent this dialogue is and we are happy to support their efforts with our prayers/meditations.

Day 49:
Yesterday during the sacred opening of URI Europe we prayed/meditated for Religious Forum of Helsinki CC. After the last morning of work I immediately took a shuttle to the airport and came back home in Buenos Aires and I didn’t send the message by email. I am sorry. I am sending it now and will send day 50 in a few minutes.
This CC was created: “to promote deep dialogue among different religions, traditions, and worldviews; to support a culture of peace, social justice and healing” and has described their activities as: “We had an open meeting with the topic of religious Pluralism and post-pluralism in the cultural Center of Helsinki, we have signed the Members Declaration on December 2nd, 2004. We were also one of the organizers that held and interfaith prayer event for the victims of the Tsunami in January 2005.”

This CC was created “to increase the mutual understanding and cooperation between various religions.” The community directory says: “The Forum of Religions in Turku holds seminars and panel discussions with members of different faiths in order to increase mutual understanding, to exchange knowledge about different religions, and to provide a meeting place for inter-religious encounter. We participated in the Fair of Religions and Ideologies, where we had a booth with a peace pole and the altar of peace. This was the first event of its kind in Finland; people from seven different faith traditions gathered around the peace pole to pray. We will organize a study session for adults and also visit some schools to teach children.” Let´s join in prayer /meditation to support their good work.

Day 47:
Today we will pray/meditate to support URI - Copenhagen - CC for URI. This is how they describe their work in the community directory: “We also began our CC shortly after the Parliament of the World's Religions in Barcelona in 2004. We were able to gather a diversity of 10 different traditions. We believe that our Danish CCs are good models to show us how we can make a difference and by doing so we need to widen the dialogue. In order to create something new you don't only need to have wisdom; you also need to own courage, trust, hope - and especially patience.” Yesterday afternoon when we took a bus to participate in the Interfaith Symphone, I sat close to a young man who told me that members in his CC- which was new- had spent some time in personal introductions and now they were going to go deeper into faith presentation. Guess what, he was member of Copenhagen CC, the CC and we are supporting today! Courage, trust, hope and patience are working! Let´s pray/meditate that they grow in these virtues.
May members of URI Copenhagen CC fulfill their aspirations and live in Peace!
May Peace prevail in Denmark!

Day 46:
Today we are supporting URI-Aarhus Cooperation Circle from Denmark. Their purpose: “The same as URI, especially with the purpose of working for greater understanding and mutual respect between people of diverse faiths; taking initiatives; and participating in visible projects that build bridges between people of diverse faiths and creations.” This is their description of activities: Our CC was formed less than two months after the Parliament of the World's Religions in Barcelona in July 2004. We gathered a diversity from 12 different religions and traditions and constitute ourselves in the city of Aarhus in an atmosphere of harmony and commitment on 11 September 2004.
Some of the members are key figures in interfaith work in Denmark, for example a general secretary and a co-chairman of ISKON are involved with these new circles and also some Muslim leaders and people who carry the love and knowledge of the dialogue among Buddhists and Christians. Members are now getting to know each other in order to build up trustworthy common ground to do things together. We believe our CC can be a good example of what can happen if time and atmosphere is right…” Allow me to share something: this morning when I read the prayer during the sacred opening of our last day of GC meeting here in Antwerp I was told that some of the members of Aarhus Cooperation Circle were sitting right beside me They were in Antwerp to participate in the URI Europe meeting starting after GC meeting. It was such a joy feeling their gratitude for a global prayer/meditation to support their work! They shared that they are preparing a wonderful event that is going to take place on September 21st for International Day of Peace. During the occasion they are going to present their CD with music of all faiths called “Sounds of Heaven.”

Day 45:
The CC we are supporting today is Balkan as a Soul-Bridge CC. It is quite clear how important the purposes of Soul-Bridge CC are in Bosnia and Herzagovina: “developing relationships with and appreciation of different cultures and religions" and "joint action; building a network for peace; launching URI in Mostar, Bosnia." They describe their work like this: "Our aim is to organize a conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 'Millenium Rainbow of Mostar' (English)/‘Mostarska Duga Novog Milenija’ (Bosnian). This event will bring young people together in Mostar, half of them from Bosnia and Herzegovina (of Bosniak, Croatian and Serbian background), the other half from various European countries. The conference program is planned to be comprised of different elements, e.g. workshops on communication skills; lectures and discussion-groups; a pilgrimage to important places of different traditions in the Mostar-region (Catholic, Muslim, Serbian-Orthodox, Jewish); an art-exhibition, fashion-show and a concert; prayers for peace of all religions involved; trip to seaside; workshop on environmental challenges; ceremony on Mostar-bridge with an inter-religious choir; introduction to URI; and developing action-plan for further activities. After an excellent start we are currently facing the challenges of fund-raising and finding volunteers and time to continue our work.” As we read this and imagine the challenge, we make their purpose ours as we pray/meditate.

Created in Belgium in 1959 and in contact and supporting URI growth in Europe from its very beginning, Bonder zonder Naam, “a social – cultural movement which strengthens the best in people” as we read in their purpose, is an extraordinary community service organization with 2,000 volunteers creating proverbs, working with values education and helping among others families in distress. While we are here they will be launching the Flemish Partnership in Interfaith Dialogue.
As we pray/meditate to support their work let us have in mind the very many children, families and communities they are taking care of.
