Gold Coast, Australia. The Multi-Faith Devotions Group of Griffith University invites Ministers or Representatives of Religions based in the Gold Coast Region to observe the IDP.
I am writing this letter as the student representative of the Multi-Faith Devotions Group of Griffith University at the Gold Coast Campus, regarding the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE. It is my pleasure to invite you to share an International Day of Peace event at the Gold Coast campus of Griffith University.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
The United Nations General Assembly, unanimously declared, in a resolution adopted on 30 November 1981, that the third Tuesday in September, the opening day of its regular annual session, should be officially dedicated and observed as the International Day of Peace and should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideas of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.
In response to this call, we would like to appeal and encourage you to participate and contribute by celebrating the day with us on September 21.
A RECENT INITIATIVE AIMED AT ERADICATING RELIGIOUS BASED VIOLENCE
A recent action of the United Nations was to commission a study that examined the issues underlying religious based violence. Following consideration of the findings and recommendations, the ‘United Religions Initiative’ was formed.
MULTIFAITH DEVOTIONS GROUP
We are students, staff and friends who meet weekly and read from the world’s various religious writings. The group felt that the United Religions Initiative was an interesting project that we were interested in supporting.
CELEBRATING: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE - GOLD COAST 2005
We therefore invited the Australian Member to the United Religions Initiative to briefly address the audience as the key feature for this year’s International Day of Peace Celebration.
Speakers are being invited from the Gold Coast Indigenous Community, the Hindu Community, the Christian Community, Buddhist Community, Baha’i Faith Community, Taoist Community, Islamic Community, Judaic Community and others who will address the topic ‘Contributions to World Peace’ for approximately 5 minutes each. If you would like to be included as a speaker, or let me know the name of a speaker on your behalf, please let me know and I will include your/their name in the program that will be printed and available on the day.
This will be followed by an open forum, which includes audience participation. The meeting will be closed with a silent meditation on what we each can contribute to a non-violent world, and afternoon tea will be available.
Following on from this cover letter is the program (in draft state), and a scanned pamphlet that describes ‘United Religions Initiative’, and which will give you some background on the keynote address. Invitations will be printed and available on Friday the 16th of September.
May the International Day of Peace remind us that our permanent commitment, above all personal interests or differences of any kind, must be to peace.
We look forward to hearing from you. Contact: Carolynn Newport--
