URI Participation in International Day of Peace
September 21, 2007  Plans

URI Cooperation Circle member groups are encouraging each other to participate in some way in honoring the International Day of Peace. We hope everyone will observe the Minute of Silence at 12 noon (especially in schools, and at your Peace Pole if you have one nearby) and encourage activities promoting nonviolence in your region in support of the ceasefire.

Many URI CCs will participate in the International Day of Peace Vigil. Some CC events planned for 2007 include:

  • Two interfaith concerts called “Sounds of Heaven” hosted by URI Denmark. One concert will be held on the eve of IDP and another on Sept. 23. Please visit http://www.uridanmark.dk/ for more information.
  • The South India region will be hosting a peace rally on IDP.
  • The URI SF Peninsula CC will will show the film "Peace One Day," On Monday Sept. 10th at 7:30pm [New Vision Church, 450 Chadbourne Ave., Millbrae, CA]
  • The URI CC in Ethiopia will be hosting a day long event featuring Peace songs by children, Peace messages from National and International organizations, panel discussions, an art and music competetion, and will have a Peace Award ceremony. To view the entire schedule of events, click here .
  • URI East India, especially the Ektaan cc and Rural Development Society cc, will be engaging in a Peace March with local groups and government officials, honoring Peacebuilders, and hosting a panel discussion with local leaders from various traditions.
  • In Houston, Texas, URI Global Council Trustee P.K. McCary will be commemorating the International Day of Peace on her radio show The Peace Hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Listeners can tune into 90.1 F.M. Houston or go to www.KPFT.org.
  • The URI-MCC Pakistan will celebrate with songs and poems by little children, recitation from various holy books on the themes of peace, messages from Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Sikh and Parsi religious leaders and participants. There will also be a Peace Walk, candle vigil, observance of one minute of silence, and a message from Mr. Ban, Secretary General of the UN. Dominican Center, 153 Ali Block, New Garden Town, Lahore.
  • URI MENA celebrated the International Day of Peace early.  They focused on children and had women lead this unique and uplifting festivity.  To read more, click here .

Keep checking in for news and ideas - this story will be expanding as we learn about our CCs plans for observing IDP.
