Karmiel, Israel. On Sunday, March 9, 2008, the 6th grade students of Kalanit School in Karmiel, Israel, invited their peers from A-Salaam School to participate in an activity day. The focus of this event was to respond to recent tragic events and war in the south, the theme being "Emotions."

This event was in the happy spirit of the month of Adar, which started on March 9th, the same day as the event. As it says: "When Adar enters, happiness is growing."

The teachers began the event by bringing the two groups of students together in the classroom for an overview of the planned activities for the day. The children were happy to see their friends from last year, and sat in circles together. Recent current events were not mentioned for the larger part of the day, but during this introductory session, students did share their feelings on the massacre in the Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

After breakfast in the classroom and activities during the break, the children participated in the activity of the "Mood Balloons." This creative activity, based on Hosen program, prompts kids to use balloons to express their feelings. First, each child chose the color of their balloon and then designs it, according how they feel at the moment. When each child was finished, the class joined all the balloons together in chains to decorate the class for Purim. To the joy of all, the students from both schools said that they were happy to be part of the activity. The conversation took place in both languages, Hebrew and Arabic; the students of Kalanit were especially happy as they could practice their Arabic.

Afterwards, the boys' soccer team from each school competed, while the girls cheered for the players. Both teams were very respectful towards one another. The Kalanit team brought home the victory. When the game ended, the girls took the field for a dodge ball game, and the girls from A-Salaam won.

At the end the day, the entire group went on an excursion to nearby Galilee Park. The tour was given in both languages by teachers Amir Lazar and Nader Taha. The group learned about the geography surrounding Galilee. During the trip, children from both schools were walking, hugging, and talking with one another. At the end of the day, they played games and socialized. Everyone was happy with the event, and many expressed interested in meeting again in the near future.
