URI AFRICA STATEMENT ON KENYA

We, the URI Africa Trustees, and the Regional and Sub-regional Coordinators of URI, are deeply concerned about the violence that is currently taking place in Kenya following the recent election results. We are very saddened by the loss of many lives, the displacement of people, and the destruction of property in that beautiful country which has been a beacon of peace and stability for so long.

As members of an international interfaith peace organization which is working to promote a culture of peace, nonviolence, justice and healing, we call upon all parties to stop the violence and to find a peaceful solution to the current situation.

We highly appreciate the efforts of religious leaders like Rev. Desmond Tutu, the United Nations, the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the African Union, and the many other mediators who are working to end the crisis. The involvement of religious leaders and elders in Kenya to resolve this problem is of paramount importance. We call upon the international community to support these and all other peace efforts currently underway, and to provide humanitarian assistance to those who are suffering as a result of the crisis.

We strongly believe that dialogue and reconciliation is the only way to reach lasting and sustainable peace. We call upon all parties to immediately engage in constructive dialogue to restore peace, to further the democratic process, and to create the climate for national
reconciliation.

MAY PEACE PREVAIL IN KENYA.
