We are very grateful that the URI network has grown enough to be of service in the terrible aftermath of the recent Asia Earthquake. Our grassroots members, both within and beyond Pakistan, have been able to provide multi-faith cooperation for relief on the ground in the affected area, financial resources going directly to people in need through international donations, and worldwide prayer support from people of all faiths.
Here are updates to our first report from Pakistan.
Nearly two weeks after the earthquake, we finally heard from Mr. Saeedur Rehman, Coordinator of the Press for Peace URI Cooperation Circle (CC) in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, that all members of this CC are safe.
Mr. Saeed and Mr. M. Abbas, Assistant Coordinator, told how the Press for Peace was the first NGO to reached the victims of the this horrific earthquake. They took out the dead bodies from the destroyed building, University of Azad Kashmir, and school buildings. The URI members buried the dead. They helped the wounded and also informed the international media about the worst humanitarian crises faced by Pakistan and Kashmir.
They were joined by URI MCC Pakistan members from Islamabad--the Ibteda Foundation CC and Universal Interfaith Peace Movement headed by Syed Husnain Gillani and Allama G.R. Chishti. They gave food, blankets, tents, medicine and saved many lives. What a marvelous work, service and witness our URI members have given at this most difficult and challenging time. We salute the courage, love and care our URI members are giving to the victims of the quake.
Fr. James Channan reports: “Several members of the URI MCC Pakistan will be visiting these areas again on the 30th of October. We will offer comforts, solidarity, our love and compassion for them and also give them relief goods in the form of food, clothes, tents and cash. I am organizing the trip and will distribute whatever we are going to collect out of your generosity.” “The Muslims all around the world will celebrate the feast of Eidul Fitr on the 5th of November. This feast is celebrated after the 30 days of fasting of the month of Ramadan. So it will be a good time to give them some relief so that they are able to have something with them before this feast.”
