Indigenous Peoples

From its chartering days, URI has recognized the importance of including the voices and participation of Indigenous people. We recognize and value the people living on the land of their ancestors, and URI Cooperation Circles act to protect the rights of all indigenous people to live in accordance with their traditions, and to uplift their voices.

Some examples of this work include:

  • standing with the American Indian tribes at Standing Rock Indian Reservation to protect sacred land from an oil pipeline;
  • writing down South American oral histories to preserve them for future generations;
  • sending out awareness videos and messages worldwide for Indigenous People’s Day; performance troupes teaching traditional Zulu dances, costume, and culture;
  • protecting Indigenous people’s rights to their ancestral land and demanding equity and representation in local governments; and
  • gatherings devoted to reconciliation, listening, and harmonious living.

Standing Rock

While the massacre at Wounded Knee is out of our reach, Standing Rock is happening right now, and I believe that we as people of conscience must act so as not to stand idly by and let history repeat itself at the expense of our Indigenous sisters and brothers.
