Punjab-Pakistan Province Governor holds historic interfaith gathering
Monday, 26 June 2006

Lahore, Pakistan.  Tehreek Taraque-E-Insanaite-CC reports that in an unprecedented action, the Governor of Punjab Province, Pakistan, invited members of the Muslim, Baha'i and Hindu communities to join with Christians in ending (opening) their Lenten fast on the eve of Holy Week, 13 April, 2006.

Governor Gen. (Retired) Muhammad Khalid Maqbool invited both dignitaries and deserving community members to the Governor's Home in Lahore. During the occasion representatives of each of the religions as well as the Governor spoke movingly of the occasion, the Governor awarded cash gifts to needy Christian and Muslim recipients, and high tea was served at the conclusion as everyone broke fast together with the Christians.

Speaking at the ceremony, Gen. Maqbool said that it was a great honor to open the fast with his Christian brothers and sisters in Holy Week, and urged the clergy and civil society organizations to create similar interfaith opportunities at the grassroots level.

URI CC Coordinator Yuel Bhatti appreciated that this event was a fruitful outcome of the presence of URI, such as in the many programs arranged by Fr. James Channan and the Pakistan MCC, and the Tehreek Taraque-E-Insanaite-CC's invitation to Muslim friends to break their Ramadan fast together.

Details of all the presentations and blessings follow, as reported by Yuel Bhatti.
