Jordanian CCs Bring Joy of Ramadan to Orphans
Written by Sam Ruben
Friday, 18 September 2009

On Tuesday September 15th, Jordan Seeds for Peace CC in partnership with Mercy CC, organized an entertainment program and Ramadan Iftar for 80 orphans from the Theodor Schneller School in southeast Amman, Jordan.  Included in the program were games of volleyball, musical performances, a talent show, and an exchange of gifts.  Along with the 20 delegation leaders, the Cooperation Circles included youth in their program for the first time with 26 teens aged between 15 & 17 joining in the festivities.  Placed on volleyball teams together the youths quickly began forming bonds of friendship.  MENA Regional Coordinator Mamoun Khreisat tells us that "spontaneously, after the matches, orphans and seeds started to mingle and engage in small talk. Then teen spirit noise prevailed over the place; talent performances, laughing, singing…etc. The atmosphere was moving; you can feel positive energy everywhere, you only see smiling faces and hear laughter all around you."

Volunteering for Peace CC-Ramadan Relief Program in Palestine
Written by Tareq Altamimi
Friday, 11 September 2009
Almesafer, Palestine. With great pleasure I would like to inform you that Volunteering for Peace  (VFP) CC  in Palestine conducted a relief program during Ramadan Month at Almesafer area south of Hebron on Sunday September 6th in one of the most marginalized areas of Palestine.

Before providing the food packages I went in a field visit to the area. While there I met with old women, children, and youth, some of whom told me that they hadn't had a meal for the last 2 days. Some said that they live only on bread which they make from flour donated by neighbors. I have visited different marginalized areas but this one was the poorest and most marginalized which I have visited. There is still much need there, the Almasafer area is inhabited with Bedouin families who live in tents and they don't have the basic needs of life.

Jerusalem Peacemakers

“There is peace in the Middle East, and we have seen it.”

This quote by Bishop Swing reflects the hope and trust that live in the heart of URI.  It seems daily that the media provides us with the details of a new negative aspect of the Palestinian/Israeli relationship.  Rarely are we presented with the positive steps being taken to bring peace to this region long beset by conflict.  As the Bishop said, this peace does indeed exist and is being acted out on a daily basis by URI members and others across the Middle East.

Regenerating the Seeds of Peace
Written by Sam Ruben
Tuesday, 21 April 2009

In an era where most Western notions of Islam are defined by media coverage of fundamentalist groups and where radical extremists are presented as the face of the Muslim world, a voice has risen in Palestine carrying the call of moderation.  Wasatia Cooperation Circle is a Palestinian movement dedicated to spreading the values of moderation, centrism, justice, fairness, and balance as reflected in the three Abrahamic religions.  Launched on March 21st, 2007 in concert with the beginning of spring, Wasatia CC draws its name from the Holy Quran, the Cow Sura, Verse 143: “And thus we have created you Ummatan Wasata [centrist nation/moderate nation].”  Calling for a regeneration of the seeds of peace, tolerance and the acceptance of the other, this moderate Muslim movement advocates a peaceful, negotiated settlement for the Arab-Israeli conflict while promoting a tolerant, democratic, peaceful culture in Palestine.
