Eilat Interfaith Encounter March 2006
Tuesday, 09 May 2006

This encounter was planned to focus on the theme of streams in Islam but was changed to focus on the political cartoons that recently ignited Europe.

Mazal Katzir brought a set of pictures of the cartoons and the attached text.

The group tried to understand what made Muslims so angry. During the process, Muslims participating in this encounter clarified the sensitivities of Muslim believers. No member of the group agreed with the violent and hateful way some Muslims reacted. As a result, an interesting discussion developed about the feeling of Muslims in the Western World, the problematic nature of the "Global Village", and the intention to enjoy Western advantages without integrating into society.

Opinions were disputed on whether it was possible, or even desirable, to prevent the publication of these cartoons or whether it is better to publish them to reveal the real problems of the West in atime with such human mobility around the globe.

The next encounter will take place on Thursday, May 4th, and will be a preparation encounter to the big M'ghar retreat.
