Suchith Abeyewickreme, 28, was born in Bangkok, Thailand to Sri Lankan parents but has lived most of his life in his home country of Sri Lanka. He is part of the Theravada Buddhist tradition. He joined URI in 2010 having taken part in a “Moral Imagination” workshop in Sri Lanka organized by the Shanthi Sena Cooperation Circle and URI South India. Suchith initially pursued higher education in Electrical Engineering until he realized that his life path lead in another direction and switched his career towards social development and peacebuilding. During his time at University Suchith joined AIESEC, the world’s largest student run leadership organization, and spent 7 years in various leadership roles within the organization. He has been involved in many projects on education, entrepreneurship, leadership, HIV/AIDS and cultural diversity. He currently works with Sarvodaya, Sri Lanka’s largest people’s organization, as the Secretariat Coordinator for the South Asia Region of the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC). He coordinates GNRC’s inter-faith and inter-cultural Ethics Education programme for Children in South Asia. He is also a regional trainer on GNRC’s ‘Learning to Live Together’ manual for Ethics Education for Children. In his free time Suchith enjoys travelling in Sri Lanka, reading, meditation and Yoga. He has a special interest in supporting reconciliation efforts in Sri Lanka and in helping people who have greatly suffered from the 30 years of armed conflict that came to an end recently; and this is what he wants to focus his work as a URI Youth Ambassador on in 2011.
