Alongside the United Nations International Day of Peace, the UN held an event titled “Sustainable Peace - Sustainable Development” at United Nations Headquarters in New York, NY, USA. Five hundred people attended in person, and video of the event was posted on the UN website for many more people to enjoy around the world.

URI’s Cooperation Circle “Voices for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons” was represented by the key organizer and moderator of the event, Jonathan Granoff, who is President of the Global Security Institute and a strong voice against the use of nuclear weapons. Also assisting with this event was Monica Willard, URI United Nations Representative, and the Cooperation Circle “The United Religions Initiative at the United Nations,” a collection of representatives to the UN of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Both Jonathan Granoff and Monica Willard are featured in the URI video “Voices for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons.”

There were six URI volunteers present, and there were additional volunteers from the Mission of Jamaica just helping with security. Jonathan Granoff worked closely with the UN Under-secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, the Mission of Jamaica and the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates to make this event happen.
