Faith Community: Islam

Iyad Abumoghli is a distinguished international leader in environmental diplomacy, sustainable development, and cross-sector collaboration. Over a career spanning more than three decades with the United Nations and allied global institutions, he has worked at the intersection of environmental policy, economic development, and peacebuilding.

He has held senior leadership roles with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), including as Director of the New York Office and Special Representative of the Executive Director, where he advanced multilateral partnerships among governments, civil society, business, and faith-based organizations.

Earlier, he served as Deputy Director of the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, and played a central role in shaping global approaches to sustainable consumption and production, climate resilience, and environmentally responsible investment. Now retired from the UN, Mr. Abumoghli is sought after for senior volunteer roles in numerous global interfaith and environment related not-for-profit organizations.  He is the founder of the Al-Mizaan Foundation, which promotes ethical finance, ecological responsibility, and stewardship rooted in Islamic values, bridging faith traditions with modern sustainability practice.

In joining the URI’s Strategic Advisory Council, Iyad brings a rare combination of global policy expertise, moral leadership, and deep interfaith fluency. His work consistently integrates environmental stewardship with social justice, economic inclusion, and spiritual values — closely aligned with URI’s mission of building cultures of peace, justice, and healing for the Earth and its communities.

Through his international networks, experience working across cultures and belief systems, and his ability to convene unlikely partners around shared ethical commitments, Iyad strengthens URI’s capacity to engage global institutions, philanthropic actors, and faith-based leaders in advancing peacebuilding and sustainable, values-driven solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.
