The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) was established in 2005, as the political initiative of Mr. Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General and co-sponsored by the Governments of Spain and Turkey. Through a network of partnerships, UNAOC supports the development of projects and initiatives that promote understanding and reconciliation among cultures, ethnicities, and religions globally, including but not limited to between ‘Muslim’ and ‘Western’ societies, focusing on the following program areas: Youth, Media, Education, Migration, and Women.

In consideration of their respective missions, objectives, and areas of work, UNAOC and URI will cooperate in the development and implementation of projects, which are in line with their respective missions, including but not limited to launching common initiatives, implementing the Plan of Action for Safeguarding Religious Sites for the United Nations, and jointly supporting high-level conferences including UNAOC Global Forums.
