URI CC Salaam Shalom Educational Foundation was recognized by the Agape International Spiritual Center as a local hero for nonviolence in Los Angeles on February 3. The award was given as part of the 14th Annual Season of Nonviolence, a national 64-day educational, media and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating the power of nonviolence to heal and transform lives and communities. The Season of Nonviolence was started in 1997 by Arun Gandhi to commemorate, celebrate and carry on the work of his grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

California-based Salaam Shalom promotes peace through education and contemplative, community-building communication in the LA area as well as in the Middle East, where it co-sponsors award-winning Waldorf schools for Jewish and Arab children.
