The Rev. Gibbs will join fellow speakers Herb Behrstock, vice president of the United Nations Association – USA East Bay and Pastor Kevin Thompson of the Universal Peace Federation at the event, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Bay Area Family Church, 2305 Washington St. in San Leandro.
The half-day celebration will also feature several workshops with the overall theme of “Are We Making a Difference?” Those workshops will include “The Christian Mystic Way to Ecstatic Union and Profound Peace” with Master Leora Bernard, director of the Center of Light in Oakland and “Global Peace and Spirituality in Everyday Life” with Prabha Duneja, founder and president of the Geeta Society in Pleasanton .
They will also include “The Revolution of One: Peace Begins With Me” with Charlie Toledo, director of the Suscol Intertribal Council in Napa; “The Responsibility of Youth in Our Global Village” with Pastor Kevin Thompson of the Bay Area Family Church and “Story as Entry to Life Beyond War” with Libby and Len Traubman, heads of the Jewish-Palestinian Living Room Dialogue in San Mateo.
The event will also include a luncheon to celebrate the “Brothers/Sisters of Peace” project and a musical performance by the “Nadeshiko” choir.
The program is organized by URI with the Universal Peace Federation, United Nations Association – USA East Bay, the Women’s Federation for World Peace and the Women’s Interfaith Circle of Service. Co-sponsors include AHIMSA of Berkeley, the American Clergy Leadership Conference, Carry the Vision, Centers of Light, the Geeta Society, Healthy Communities, the Interfaith Center at the Presidio, Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County, the Jewish-Palestinian Living Room Dialogue, Pathways to Peace, the Principled Academy, Service for Peace and the Suscol Inter-Tribal Council.
The “Pathways to Peace” event is dedicated to the International Day of Peace, an annual event celebrated by the United Nations and people throughout the world as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence. The theme of this year’s Peace Day – celebrated everywhere on Sept. 21 – is “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future,” in keeping with the recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
