Honoring Mother Earth Through Action and Community

21 April 2026
earth day

Earth Day is a moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for the planet and to celebrate the many ways communities around the world are already doing just that. Across the URI network, Earth care is deeply woven into our mission of building cultures of peace, justice, and healing for the earth and all living beings.

URI Cooperation Circles (CCs) worldwide and partners show that when we care for the Earth, we also care for one another.

Guided by a commitment to protect and preserve the Earth for present and future generations, URI’s global network brings this vision to life through grassroots action, interfaith collaboration, and a deep respect for the interconnectedness of all life. This Earth Day, we celebrate not just a moment but a movement rooted in connection, care, and collective action.

Healing the Earth, Together in Europe

The Healing the Earth webinar series continues to bring people together every third Monday of the month. Each gathering includes a prayer or reflection for the Earth, a presentation from a URI member or partner engaged in environmental restoration or climate justice, and practical tools that participants can apply within their own communities. These sessions are a powerful reminder that collective reflection and shared learning can inspire meaningful change.

Reducing Waste, Empowering Women in Cameroon

cameroon

In Cameroon, URI Global Council Trustee Françoise Ngnedjou Foute organised a women’s empowerment initiative that trained 60 women, including Indigenous participants and international refugees, in “food transformation.” The training introduced innovative ways to use discarded parts of corn and cassava, such as turning cassava into flour for pastries.

This initiative beautifully reflects interfaith and intercultural collaboration while addressing food sustainability. It reminds us, especially on Earth Day, to receive the Earth’s gifts with gratitude and to use them responsibly.

Reviving Ancestral Wisdom in URI Latin America and the Caribbean

Across Latin America and the Caribbean, URI is supporting the recovery of Indigenous ancestral medicine through both virtual and in-person gatherings. This work focuses particularly on women healers, midwives, and herbalists who preserve traditional knowledge and foster healing of body, mind, and spirit.

By reconnecting with ancestral practices, these communities are not only supporting survivors of violence but also strengthening their relationship with the Earth. This integrated approach nurtures both human well-being and environmental balance, building cultures rooted in peace and resilience.

Designing for Sustainability in Malawi

Malawi environment

In Malawi, Nkhudzi Bay Utale CC and Mangochi West CC joined forces to complete a 12-day internationally accredited permaculture design course. Participants explored topics such as soil health, water conservation, agroforestry, and sustainable land design.

Permaculture emphasizes harmony between people and ecosystems, an approach that reflects URI’s vision of interconnected Earth communities. Congratulations to all the new permaculturists contributing to environmental restoration.

Environmental Peacebuilding in Action in Bethlehem

At the Palestinian Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability in Bethlehem, environmental peacebuilders are working to protect ecosystems in a region shaped by ongoing conflict. Their efforts demonstrate that environmental stewardship can also be an act of resilience and peacebuilding, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Youth Leading Environmental Change in Egypt

MENA

The Egyptian Female Lawyers Association (EFLA) CC recently hosted a “Youth Environmental Initiatives” workshop, bringing together 23 environmental advocates. Participants shared projects addressing plastic reduction, Nile clean-ups, and innovative tools for reporting illegal waste dumping. The workshop concluded with the symbolic planting of olive trees, a powerful gesture of hope and renewal.

Sustainable Farming for the Future in Malawi

Phalombe Youth Arms Organization (PYAO) CC is equipping young people with skills to combat land degradation through compost-making workshops. By promoting natural fertilizers, they are reducing reliance on costly and harmful chemicals.

As one participant shared, the training came at the right time to help increase agricultural productivity and income, showing how environmental solutions can also support economic resilience.

Youth Protecting the Coastline in Somalia

URI SOMALIA

At Liido Beach in Mogadishu, URI Somalia CC leads annual youth clean-up efforts to protect marine ecosystems. This year, many young beachgoers spontaneously joined the initiative.

Their participation, especially among those who grew up during conflict, reflects a powerful sense of responsibility, hope, and commitment to environmental protection and community wellbeing.

From permaculture training in Malawi to ancestral healing in Latin America, from youth activism in Egypt to coastal clean-ups in Somalia, URI communities are showing that Earth care is not just an idea, it is a lived action.

This Earth Day, we honor these efforts and reaffirm our commitment to nurturing a world where people and the planet thrive together.
