Cambodia’s 15th Chaktomuk Short Film Festival Champions Peacebuilding, Interfaith Dialogue, and Non-Violence Through Global Cinema

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA — October [Insert Date], 2026 — As global conflicts and societal divisions dominate headlines, the Chaktomuk Short Film Festival (CSFF) is utilizing the power of cinema to foster empathy, understanding, and cultural healing.

Running its milestone 15th edition from October 30 to November 2, 2026, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s longest-running short film festival has proudly announced a dedicated slate of international films focused on themes of interfaith relations, pro-peace narratives, and the rejection of violence.

Since joining the United Religions Initiative (URI) network in 2023, CSFF—organized by the youth-led Sunflower Film Alliance—has actively worked to integrate URI’s mission into the Southeast Asian cultural landscape. This year, through a new media partnership with URI, the festival is highlighting six powerful short films selected from its 90-film global lineup that directly explore the human cost of conflict and the quiet strength of non-violence.

“Cinema is one of the most powerful tools we have for building cultures of peace,” said SUM Sithen, Festival Director. “When audiences watch a film, they are asked to step into the shoes of someone from a different faith, a different culture, or a different side of a conflict. By highlighting these six films, we are creating a safe space for Cambodian audiences to reflect on global struggles and the universal desire for peace and understanding.”

The 2026 "Pro-Peace & Interfaith" Selection:

Exploring Faith & Understanding:

  • Jumah: A deeply moving exploration of Islamic faith, prayer, and identity, showcasing the spiritual rhythms of Friday prayers and the search for inner and communal peace.

The Pro-Peace Narrative (Conflict & Healing):

  • Actually, I Didn’t Want to Stay Long: A poignant look at displacement and the human stories behind borders, reminding audiences of the universal right to safety and belonging.
  • Ballad of Fishes and Birds: A metaphorical and visually striking film that bridges divides, exploring how disparate elements of the world can find harmony rather than conflict.

Rejecting Violence:

  • Brain Space: A thought-provoking short that navigates the internal, psychological toll of aggression, advocating for mental peace over physical confrontation.
  • Kickback: A raw examination of retaliation and consequence, ultimately questioning the futility of violence and the courage it takes to choose a non-violent path.
  • Ningú Borda (Nobody Barks): A quiet, powerful reflection on societal tension and the breaking of violent cycles through restraint and compassion.

Following the main screenings in Phnom Penh, CSFF will take this message of peace on a nationwide tour to Battambang, Siem Reap, and Kep, ensuring these vital stories reach diverse grassroots communities across Cambodia.

Admission to all screenings is free to the public, fostering an inclusive environment where individuals from all walks of life can gather, watch, and discuss.

About the Chaktomuk Short Film Festival (CSFF): Founded in 2012, CSFF is organized by the Sunflower Film Alliance, a registered Cambodian non-profit dedicated to youth empowerment and storytelling. As a proud member of the United Religions Initiative (URI), CSFF uses film to promote intercultural dialogue and community building across Southeast Asia.
