East Africa Consortium International started back in 1993 as an initiative of eight determined Somali women. This organization brings a message of reconciliation and restoration to broken communities. Members serve those affected by violent conflict and natural disasters. They do so by contributing to the realization of peace and hope restoration. They envision a country where people can once again experience peace, justice and mutual trust, and where they regain personal dignity and confidence. Their peace building interventions focus on promoting peace, which members believe is not only the absence of personal and direct violence, but also the presence of justice, social cohesion and mutual acceptance. By applying a conflict transformation approach, EACI aims to transform attitudes, behavior and (local) causes of conflict, instead of only mitigating or resolving conflicts. Members consider it important to address the key drivers of conflict, since changing the conflict dynamic is necessary for a community to be resilient and to disengage from wider conflicts. This is why they focus on increasing local peace capacity through strengthening community livelihoods, developing actions in different areas (especially poverty alleviation, education, health and environment), and concentrating their efforts on the most vulnerable and displaced communties. By means of conducting workshops and seminars, drama, peace rallies, sports tournaments and pieces of training, they promote social justice and build reconciliation.
