The International Day of Peace (IDP), observed annually on September 21, was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence for strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people. URI Cooperation Circles and friends across the globe have been joining in solidarity to commemorate this day since 2000, observing it with prayer, events and service projects.
At the UN, the URI works closely with the Department of Public Information and two other NGOs to create an annual student observance, featuring the Secretary-General, UN Messengers of Peace and student presentations at UN headquarters and from UN peacekeeping sites. The event ends with the entire room sending messages of peace to every country using the World Peace Flag Ceremony.
