Praying in Solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux Reservation

3 October 2016

Revivers of Indigenous Spirituality and Ecosystems (The RISE Circle), a URI Multiregion Cooperation Circle, has issued an invitation for the entire URI community to "join us in prayers on at noon on Sunday, October 9; or Monday Oct. 10, which is Native American Day, the new name for Columbus Day in the United States.

"We are praying in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, for a peaceful stop to the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline, constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to transport 470,000 barrels per day of crude oil across private lands a half mile upstream from the Tribe's drinking water intake structures. A federal judge halted construction to a section of this pipeline on Sept. 7, after construction workers bulldozed portions of the Tribe's sacred lands. However, this struggle is not yet over."
